Tree of the Week - June 26, 2006

Stately Swamp White OakZelkova

Zelkova serrata--Japanese Zelkova 

Hardiness Zones: 5 to 8 
Height: 60 ft
Spread: 50 ft
Form: vase shaped 
Type: deciduous tree 
Annual Growth Rate: 12 to 18 inches 

Comments: Zelkova is often listed as a replacement for American Elm since it has roughly the same shape. However it is not immune to Dutch Elm Disease. The fall foliage color is reddish-bronze. 

Cultivars: 
Green Vase(R)(PP5080) - A vigorous, somewhat upright tree with orange fall color. 
'Halka'(PP5687) - The Zelkova with the shape that most resembles the American Elm. 
'Musashino' - A narrow, upright crown reaching a height of 45 feet and a spread of 20 feet. 
'Village Green' TM(PP2337) - More upright and faster growing than the species.
