Tree of the Week

Redbud in full bloom at Michigan State Universitycanadian redbud/EASTERN REDBUD

Cercis canadensis--Redbud

Hardiness Zones: 4 to 9
Height: 30 ft Spread: 25 ft
Form: rounded
Type: deciduous tree
Annual Growth Rate: 12 to 18 inches
Flowers: Purplish-pink

Comments: Redbud's purple-pink flowers make a magnificent display all over the tree in early spring. The flowers are even produced on large trunks! This tree is really a long-lasting welcome to spring for many homeowners. For the summer, leaves are heart-shaped and a deep, lush green. Redbud has a yellow fall color and is shade tolerant. It is one of few species that prefers transplanting in early spring rather than fall, and selection is best done the previous summer or fall when the leaves are present.

Cultivars:

var. alba - The flowers are pure white.

'Forest Pansy' - The new leaves are scarlet becoming
maroon as they mature. The flowers are pink.
This cultivar may not be as hardy as the species.  Neither cultivar is as available as the species.
