Tree of the Week

Delicate tree lilac flowers bloom later than the shrub lilacs

Japanese Tree Lilac

Syringa reticulata--Japanese Tree Lilac

Hardiness Zones: 3 to 7
Height: 25 to 30 ft
Spread: 20 ft
Form: oval
Type: Small deciduous tree
Annual Growth Rate: 12 to 18 inches
Flowers: white

Comments: Although a lilac, this member of the genus is quite different in appearance than those with which gardeners are more familiar. This is a small to medium size shade tree. The showy white flowers, borne in early summer, are the main ornamental feature. Deep green leaves, typical of the lilac genus, provide shade for summer and the tree's rounded outline offers a nice addition to the landscape's winter silhouette.

Cultivars:
'Ivory Silk' - Large clusters of creamy-white flowers produced when the plant is still young.
