Comments: Hedge maple is dense, low-branched and has a rounded form. The common name alludes to the plant's tolerance of severe pruning. The main ornamental feature is the yellow fall color. Hedge maple tolerates dry, compacted, and alkaline soils and will grow in clay.
It is useful in both multi-stem and single-stem forms.
Cultivars:
'Compactum' - A dwarf about 6 feet tall but spreading farther.
'Evelyn' (Queen Elizabeth TM)(PP4392) - As compared to the species, the cultivar is more vigorous, has better branch angles, and is upright when young.
'Stgrezam' (St. Gregory TM) - A rounded tree reaching a height and spread of about 35 feet. Listed as tolerant of drought and urban conditions.
