Tree of the Week - March 22, 2004

Grand Fir (center) with Korean Fir and Dawn RedwoodGrand Fir

Abies grandis--Grand Fir, Giant Fir

Hardiness Zones: 6
Height: 100 ft
Spread: 35 ft
Form: pyramidal
Type: narrow-leaved evergreen
Annual Growth Rate: 12 to 18 inches

Rich, deep-green Grand Fir foliage

Comments: Grand Fir can reach heights of over 200 feet in its native, west coast habitat. In the eastern U.S. and in landscape situations it will probably be less robust. The bright green leaves have two light colored stripes on the lower surface. Flat-looking branches with long needles make this a unique tree, and the dark green overall color gives it a beautiful contrast to many of the more everyday evergreen species.
