American
Hornbeam
Carpinus caroliniana--American Hornbeam, Ironwood, Musclewood
Hardiness Zones: 3 to 9
Height: 25 ft
Spread: 25 ft
Form: rounded
Type: deciduous tree
Annual Growth Rate: less than 12 inches
Comments: Musclewood has a crisp-looking green leaf, that changes to
red, yellow or orange fall color. The muscle-like bark is smooth, gray and fluted.
It tolerates sun or shade and most soils if moist and well-drained.
Ironwood is sufficiently tolerant of pruning that it can be used as a hedge plant.
It also makes a nice shade tree for smaller sites.
